but two environmentally-themed adventures of educational fun for ages 4-6
and 6-9. Note the following descriptions:
Roving Rangers Nature Safari
(morning adventure) Ages 4-6
This summer the Roving
Rangers are on Safari in search of a home for Tiki. This woodland elf sees how
Friend Squirrel can climb and build a leafy nest in a tree, while Friend
Chipmunk burrows cozy tunnels under the ground. Friend Fish makes pebbly nests
in its watery world, while Friend Robin builds sturdy nests of mud and grass to
raise her young. Nearby, Friend Butterfly flutters from a homespun sleeping bag
attached to a leaf. What kind of home is the right kind for Tiki?
Each day, the Roving Rangers
will explore new worlds and learn about how different creatures are adapted to
different kinds of homes. For their kind assistance in finding Tiki a home, each
Roving Ranger will receive an official Nature Safari Certificate of
Appreciation.
Jurassic in the Park
(afternoon adventure) Ages 4-6
Some were the biggest animals to ever walk the earth. Many sported large horns,
spikes and body armor. But some were small, and some resembled birds more than
reptiles. Some even boasted two brains! But not all the bizarre and fantastic
creatures of the Jurassic period were dinosaurs. The allosaurus, apatosaurus,
trachodon were all “terrible lizards.” But the pterandon, plesiosaurus, and
dimetron were not. What’s the difference? Explore the mystery of prehistory as
we conduct our own archeological dig and fossil hunt. Discover how dinosaurs
lived, and perhaps why they died; and some of their modern descendents who still
populate the earth. Come to “Jurassic in the Park.”
Junior Naturalists Outdoor
Society
(morning
adventure) Ages 6-9
At the Junior Naturalists Outdoor Society headquarters in Faraway Woods, an
urgent message has been received. There have been reported sightings of birds
walking down trees headfirst and creatures swimming backwards. Another report
tells of flying frogs, birds swimming underwater, and insects leaping over 20
times their own body length! What is happening? The JNOS must stalk, trail,
observe, and capture specimens from the Special Order of the Locomotion of
Animalia (those critters who soar, fly, glide, hop, ooze, slide, walk, and
otherwise get around). Junior
Naturalists will learn how to make and use the tools of the trade used by
professional naturalists. They will make dragonfly wings to learn about flight,
build a terrarium to learn about creatures of the soil, and how to safely and
gently trap and release animals. Junior Naturalists receive a Certificate of
Outdoor Investigations.
Paleo-World
(afternoon adventure) Ages
6-9
Return to Jurassic in the Park! In this episode,
the adventures of our budding paleontologists begin with the discovery of
mystery fossils in the Tooth, Claw, and Bone Mystery Hunt. We learn how to
interpret past events by examining the rocks, minerals, and soils of today, and
identify and classify real fossils. This is a week of hands-on science, in which
we hunt for ecofacts of plant and animal remains, artifacts made by humans, and
features in the landscape that reveal ancient activities. We’ll conduct our own
paleontological dig, and learn how to record, preserve, and interpret the
evidence found.

paper invented, and how can it be made by hand? What do windsocks symbolize?
(Custom-make your own to fly from your porch!) Create decorative sand candles,
and candles of wax. Mold plaster of paris into useful objects and cast your
pet’s footprint. Construct a toy sailboat and race the currents of the Brodhead
